A gentle, positive approach

School Readiness Starts with Feeling Secure

Children learn best when they feel safe, valued and understood. That is why our approach begins with strong relationships, familiar routines and plenty of opportunities for children to make choices, try new things and develop at their own pace.

We do not believe school readiness means pushing children into formal learning too early. Instead, we help them develop the wider skills that make the classroom feel manageable and exciting: listening, sharing, communicating, solving problems, looking after themselves and confidently asking for help.

Through purposeful play, stories, conversation, creative activities, outdoor exploration and small-group experiences, children build the foundations they will use every day at school.

The foundations for a happy start

Six Skills We Help Children Build

Every child develops differently, so our experienced team adapts activities and support to suit each child’s personality, interests and stage of development.

Confidence and Emotional Security

Children learn to recognise their feelings, cope with small challenges, celebrate success and seek support from trusted adults when they need it.

Communication and Language

We encourage conversation, storytelling, listening and asking questions so children can express themselves clearly and understand others.

Friendships and Social Skills

Children practise sharing, taking turns, joining group play, resolving disagreements and working together kindly.

Early Literacy and Numeracy

Through stories, rhymes, mark-making, counting and practical games, children develop an enjoyable and meaningful introduction to letters, sounds, numbers and patterns.

Independence and Self-Care

We help children manage coats, shoes, toileting, handwashing, mealtimes and personal belongings with growing confidence.

Curiosity and Problem-Solving

Open-ended play, outdoor learning and creative challenges encourage children to investigate, make decisions and keep trying when something is difficult.

A day full of learning

Everyday Experiences That Build School Skills

School preparation is woven naturally into the nursery day. Children develop concentration during stories, independence while choosing activities, teamwork through group projects and confidence when sharing their ideas.

Our team introduces routines that will feel familiar at school, while keeping learning playful, practical and enjoyable. Children are encouraged to have a go, learn from mistakes and recognise their own progress.

  • Listening to stories and instructions
  • Word and number recognition
  • Holding pencils and using scissors
  • Counting through songs and play
  • Taking turns in a group
  • Looking after personal belongings
  • Using the toilet independently
  • Asking confidently for help

A smooth transition

How We Prepare for the Move to School

As the start of school approaches, we make the change feel familiar, positive and manageable for children and their families.

01

Building Familiar Routines

We introduce group times, tidy-up routines, self-registration and shared responsibilities in a relaxed, age-appropriate way.

02

Talking Positively About School

Stories, role play and conversations help children understand what school may be like and give them space to ask questions.

03

Sharing Helpful Information

With parental permission, we support continuity by sharing relevant information about each child’s strengths, interests and development.

04

Supporting Children and Families

Our team is available to discuss worries, offer practical ideas and help families prepare for the first few weeks of school.

Simple Ways Families Can Support School Readiness

Preparing for School: Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need to read and write before starting school?

No. Schools expect children to arrive with a wide range of abilities. Confidence, communication, curiosity, listening and independence are often more important than being able to read or write formally.

What if my child feels anxious about starting school?

Feeling unsure about change is completely normal. We use stories, role play, conversations and familiar routines to help children understand what to expect. We will also work with you to support your child consistently.

How can I encourage more independence at home?

Give your child time to try manageable tasks for themselves, such as putting on a coat, carrying their own bag, washing their hands or opening a snack container. Offer help when needed, but celebrate effort as well as success.

Will Nightingales communicate with my child’s school?

Where appropriate and with parental permission, we can share relevant information to help support continuity and a positive transition. The exact arrangements may vary depending on the school.
